Over 18,000 people died during the final months of the German occupation in Holland due to starvation and malnutrition-related illness. Desperate times led many to eating tulip bulbs and pulling up tram tracks for firewood. There are many books, videos, and interviews that retell the harsh experiences of what life was like during the coldest, and darkest times during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Renee Fink of the Holocaust Speakers Brueau paints one of the most vivid pictures of what she remembers while surviving through this time in Holland.
